Infant Abductor Tried Ramming Mom With Car During Shopping Trip Argument In VA: Police

A 22-year-old man snatched an acquaintance's infant from her while out shopping, then got into a vehicle with the baby and tried running the mother over in northern Virginia, authorities said.

Deyvon Marquette Newman was in Gabes on Sudley Road in Manassas around 3:45 p.m. Sunday, April 30 when the incident occurred, Prince William County police said.

Newman grabbed the baby from its mother in the store and fled, authorities said. That's when he got in the car with the unsecured baby and tried hitting its mom with the vehicle, PWC police said.

The woman jumped out of the way to avoid being struck. Police later discovered Newman hit her with the vehicle earlier in the day, they said. 

Newman was found near River Bend Way and charged with felony child neglect, abduction, attempted malicious wounding, grand larceny, assault & battery, driving without a valid driver’s license, use of cell phone while operating a motor vehicle, transportation of unrestrained child.

He was being held without bond.
